This is my first project as curator of a series of concerts, the aim of which is to explore the synaesthesia between sound and image. Based on an abstract, formalist street photography, a single image will be projected and accompanied by a musician performing live. The musician finds a way to invite the audience to look at the photograph. The aim is to stimulate active perception through these two mediums. The audience may thus perceive more than what the photograph and the music represent in themselves.
Straße 1
The first edition of the event took place on 12 March 2026, at Spektral Raumohr (Motzstrasse 91, 10779 Berlin).
The vertical video is from Eric Wong’s set with a photograph by Susanne Kappe. The horizontal video is from Tony Elieh’s set with a photograph by LPFM.
The sets in the first edition went well and proved fruitful. Each one lasted quite a long time (30 minutes for Éric’s, 45 minutes for Tony’s), which allowed the audience’s perception to evolve over time.
Especially, the Eric’s set with the photo by Susanne in vertical format which was projected on the wall at the bottom of the gallery has succeeded in creating a beautiful convergence of attention towards the photograph. The depth of the room was in keeping with the soundscape Eric was creating, which seemed to extend right into the photograph depicting a scene from the Berlin U-Bahn. After that, we talked about Max Neumann’s work entitled ‘Time Squares’(1977), in which the audience discovers, in their own way, an urban space that has been subtly transformed by his sound installation. This experience confirmed that the positioning of the projection in relation to the event space would be a key factor for future editions.
